[00:00:52] And I'm Lacie, the daughter whose journey through softball has been filled with incredible wins, tough losses and so many lessons both on and off the field.

[00:02:15] What did we do today Lace? Describe what we did today.
[00:02:19] We had a very slow morning and you worked on your other podcast.

[00:02:25] And then we drove to Santa Cruz, to downtown Santa Cruz.
[00:02:30] And then we had some brunch, a very big brunch.
[00:02:36] It was very good.
[00:02:38] And then we walked to the Santa Cruz boardwalk, walked up and down, saw all the rides.
[00:02:45] A lady lost her kid.
[00:02:48] We hooked him.
[00:02:50] Hope she found him.
[00:02:52] My parents are very avid.
[00:02:53] We're very avid about finding this kid.
[00:02:56] Then we walked back to our car and got Marianne's ice cream.
[00:03:05] And then we drove back and now we're here.
[00:03:07] We're here.
[00:03:09] Yeah.
[00:03:09] So the kid getting lost, it brought up some memories.
[00:03:12] Lace, do you remember getting lost at all?
[00:03:15] I don't remember getting lost, but I remember liking to hide in the clothing racks.
[00:03:20] Yeah, that was, I think mom, you're a wizard.
[00:03:22] She hid in the clothing rack and mom was freaked out.
[00:03:26] Yeah.
[00:03:26] I think I remember freaking out a few times and getting very angry that you are hiding inside the racks.
[00:03:32] It was, it was like either Macy's or you could have made holes, one of the two, and the circular racks.
[00:03:39] We like to hide in between.
[00:03:41] I was not happy with that.
[00:03:43] Nope.
[00:03:44] It was fun in the moment.
[00:03:47] Sure.
[00:03:47] For you.
[00:03:49] But thank you.
[00:03:50] So Lace, you're having, because you're seeing your, you're having a lot of last firsts, right?
[00:03:55] Mm-hmm.
[00:03:56] The last first practice, last first.
[00:03:59] I think there's a picture of your last first.
[00:04:01] Day of school.
[00:04:02] Day of first day of school.
[00:04:04] So we went over your senior, how you're feeling.
[00:04:07] You've had a few practices on your belt.
[00:04:09] You had some scrummages lately.
[00:04:11] You're having a scrummage next weekend.
[00:04:13] How are you feeling now compared to last year?
[00:04:18] I think I feel, I don't know.
[00:04:20] It, it's back and forth sometimes.
[00:04:22] Like sometimes I'll have like a not so good bullpen.
[00:04:25] And then my mind kind of goes towards the fact where it's, you're out of time to get any better.
[00:04:32] So like you have to be better is your other bullpens.
[00:04:37] So that's where my mind goes is that you're basically out of time.
[00:04:42] And every bullpen that you don't like succeed in or do good in like it's a waste basically.
[00:04:50] Or like it was like you need to work, you need to be more present in that moment.
[00:04:56] So I've had maybe a few of those, but the rest have been really good.
[00:05:00] Like when a good bullpen goes good, I'm like, that was a good one.
[00:05:04] And then I just move on with my day.
[00:05:06] So yeah, it's expected.
[00:05:07] Right.
[00:05:07] And what I've been hearing from you, just based on our conversations is you've had some live with your teammates and live with junior college.
[00:05:16] And you actually are doing well.
[00:05:18] You're like back to, cause you, you have been a strikeout pitcher in the past.
[00:05:24] Last year, not so much, but now when you face those junior colleges last weekend, you had a lot of strikeouts and you had a lot of strikeouts with your team.
[00:05:31] Like yesterday, right?
[00:05:32] So how are you showing with how your balls reacting and how other, the other teams are reacting to your ball now?
[00:05:40] I'd say my pitches are jumping like at the very last second.
[00:05:46] That makes sense.
[00:05:48] Right when that rise ball is about to rise and they like start to swing, then it jumps up or my drop there.
[00:05:55] They really liked my drop yesterday.
[00:05:58] It looked like it was going to hit the corner.
[00:06:01] And then at that last second, like they already had to decide to swing or not.
[00:06:05] And as they're swinging, it would drop off and hit the end of their bat and it would spin out or like foul.
[00:06:10] Or I didn't, I don't think I got any swing and misses on my drop, but it would just hit the tip, the end of the bat.
[00:06:16] And then they would, it would just spin out foul.
[00:06:18] But yeah, it's definitely different than, I don't think I've ever struck so many of my teammates out, especially some of my teammates who have, have hit off me plenty of times before and probably know my sequences by now.
[00:06:30] So it's definitely different.
[00:06:33] I'm excited for next weekend playing like more junior colleges that are definitely leveling up from our first fall ball game.
[00:06:42] So like SJCC, West Valley have pretty good programs.
[00:06:46] So excited to see what, what that entails.
[00:06:51] Yeah.
[00:06:52] And mom will get you in a second.
[00:06:54] This is fun on that right now.
[00:06:56] Just talking softball a little bit.
[00:06:57] Last year, it seemed like your rise ball, they would fall them off a lot or they would lay off, right?
[00:07:02] Because your rise ball would dart out immediately and they knew it was a ball or maybe it didn't have that last tail at the end and they would fall it off.
[00:07:13] And then you're like, all of a sudden, four pitch inning or four pitch at bat turns into an eight to 10 pitch at bat.
[00:07:19] And then all of a sudden they had a single up the middle and it's like frustrating.
[00:07:23] Yeah.
[00:07:23] They kind of described it like last year.
[00:07:25] I would probably describe it as like a high fastball, to be honest.
[00:07:28] Yeah.
[00:07:29] But they said like, Anissa, one of our catchers was describing as, it just looks so good and you're basically too late.
[00:07:37] You already, you're already mid swing when it's too late.
[00:07:40] So that's the, that's the goal of pretty much all my pitches really.
[00:07:44] It needs to look good.
[00:07:46] And then, yeah.
[00:07:48] And then having these intentions behind each pitch probably is helping as well.
[00:07:53] Yeah.

[00:09:32] We don't know if that's happening.
[00:09:33] She's thinking about a lot of things.
[00:09:35] I think it's weird in a way because I still want to think of you as my young daughter, but
[00:09:45] you're growing up.
[00:09:46] So I'm excited for you.
[00:09:48] I'm excited for the season.
[00:09:50] I'm hoping that it's going to be a positive season and that it's everything that you want
[00:09:58] to be on a level that is good memories.
[00:10:02] And like you said, I just want you to have fun.
[00:10:04] I want it to be a fun season and winning's fun.
[00:10:07] Of course, you want to win.
[00:10:09] But hopefully this.
[00:10:12] You have that mentality and that.

[00:10:16] Not meant like it is a mentality, but it's also like a like a an outlook.
[00:10:23] Of how you want this season to go and hopefully it is what you have desired it to be focus
[00:10:32] on what it is you want to be between you, your coaches, your teammates, your experience
[00:10:38] because this is your last year.
[00:10:40] You got to make the best of it.
[00:10:42] I'm hoping that you have the best year of your college this year.

[00:10:51] I think it was episodes 12 and 13, we had a double episode.
[00:10:55] What about, what are, what were your feelings or how, what were you thinking about when we
[00:11:01] switched teams to Greg?
[00:11:02] We got that visit to North Carolina.
[00:11:05] We thought they were going to come out to see Lacey and then COVID hit.
[00:11:09] And then everything just, not only did the country shut down, but just the recruiting.
[00:11:13] And so when it went silent there for a while, what were your thoughts and how are you feeling
[00:11:20] towards the whole kind of just, I don't want to say process, you hate to word process, but
[00:11:24] the whole situation.
[00:11:26] What were your thoughts with that?
[00:11:28] I was terrified.
[00:11:30] Terrified about with what?
[00:11:32] That she would not get a scholarship or she wouldn't know college?
[00:11:35] Terrified of what was going to happen.
[00:11:36] We didn't know what was going to happen.
[00:11:37] And switching teams, that was not a part of our goal.
[00:11:44] And it happens.
[00:11:46] And back then, I still think everybody, everything happens for a reason.
[00:11:51] Back then, I didn't feel like it happened for a reason.
[00:11:55] I was very, I was not happy about it.
[00:11:58] But then going to that new team, I think, helps you.
[00:12:04] And it took me a long time to actually realize that was a good thing.
[00:12:09] And then switching teams again after that.
[00:12:13] I was not happy with that.
[00:12:16] And then the ultimate goal is that you got back to Bat Busters with Brockamonte.
[00:12:21] And that was probably the best thing that could have happened for you.
[00:12:26] And along the way, just seeing how your coaches like Coach Greg and breaks, I don't think you would be where you're at without those stepping stones in your softball journey.
[00:12:40] And now I look back at it, I'm like, okay, maybe I didn't like it at that point.
[00:12:44] But it did happen for a reason.
[00:12:46] I know I was that mom that was always checking Twitter back when COVID was happening.
[00:12:51] What's going on?
[00:12:51] Who's going where?
[00:12:52] How come this and how come that?
[00:12:54] What's going on with her?
[00:12:55] And how come this doesn't happen to you?
[00:12:56] And I had to shut, I couldn't do Twitter anymore.
[00:13:00] I couldn't look at it because I couldn't look at all the parents saying, oh, my daughter got this call.
[00:13:04] My daughter is going here.
[00:13:05] My daughter is going there.
[00:13:06] And I knew you weren't getting anything.
[00:13:09] And I was like, there's absolutely nothing wrong with Lacey.
[00:13:12] There's no reason why she shouldn't be given the same opportunities as the other girls.
[00:13:17] So I found myself in a very angry place.
[00:13:23] And I was angry at a lot of people.
[00:13:25] But I had to eliminate that stuff from our family, like that whole Twitter situation.
[00:13:31] Yeah.
[00:13:32] Yeah, you can do that.
[00:13:33] I don't want to go into it too much.
[00:13:35] I don't know.
[00:13:36] No, you did.
[00:13:36] Lacey, you've talked about it, right?
[00:13:38] Going down the Twitter.
[00:13:40] I think I deleted it too.
[00:13:42] Around September 1st time.
[00:13:44] Yeah.
[00:13:45] You talked about that in your solo, right?
[00:13:46] You said September 1st, you're just like, you went down the rabbit hole of watching all
[00:13:51] these girls that you played with.
[00:13:53] Announcing these scholars.
[00:13:55] Hey, what about me?
[00:13:56] I've been working my butt off.
[00:13:57] I was part of this really high organization.
[00:14:00] And so again, we talked, we talked with Greg about that too, which is you want to find those
[00:14:07] coaches that are going to be advocates for you.
[00:14:09] And I think that's where we kind of, and you don't want to say it, but we were, we were loyal and we felt betrayed.
[00:14:17] At the end of the day, we felt betrayed because we didn't feel like there was an advocate behind us at the time.
[00:14:23] So switching teams definitely was a good thing, even though we were, we're loyal people and we didn't enjoy, we didn't want to leave, but we had to.
[00:14:32] And it worked out.
[00:14:33] Right.
[00:14:34] So good stuff.
[00:14:36] So how are you feeling now?
[00:14:38] And it's her senior year at, and I don't want to get too emotional, but she's just coming out.
[00:14:44] We got Mary Nutter.
[00:14:45] Like she's going to be coming down to San Diego.
[00:14:47] We're definitely, I think we should try to go to UNLV when it's at UNLV.

[00:16:10] You have a new pitching coach who seems very eager and excited.
[00:16:16] And you feel comfortable with her, which is a positive.
[00:16:20] You have another new assistant coach who is young and seems to also be very eager.
[00:16:28] So change is good.
[00:16:29] And I would just love for that feeling that we had with Tony and Batbusters and Brackamont
[00:16:38] and Brackamont to continue on until like you were in Oklahoma with Alliance.
[00:16:42] That was the, I would say that was the epitome of your career.
[00:16:46] Was in Oklahoma.
[00:16:49] And this time we're going to be there to see it.
[00:16:52] Yeah, this time we'll end there.
[00:16:55] That's just what we rated the Capitol.
[00:16:59] So I, that was such a good, compared to what you had in 2020 and spring of 2021.
[00:17:09] And then like when it came, like maybe March, February, March of 2021 to July of 2021.

[00:17:23] And it reminded me of the summer when like Kansas City.

[00:17:27] We went to Kansas City for the first world.

[00:17:34] And then PGS.
[00:17:36] Those were just, I just want to have fun.

[00:17:42] I want to have fun with the parents and it's been difficult to have fun.
[00:17:47] The past three years.
[00:17:48] We've just gone through so many.

[00:17:54] I was like in the dorms and we still were wearing masks everywhere.
[00:17:58] And it was, and that was the year we didn't have a Mountain West champ.
[00:18:01] We didn't have a Mountain West tournament.
[00:18:02] So it was like whoever won the season was the winners.
[00:18:07] And then finally they introduced the tournament, right?
[00:18:10] My sophomore year.
[00:18:11] Yeah.
[00:18:12] Yeah.
[00:18:12] And it was better, but then it was like also bad as well, especially when it comes to conference.
[00:18:20] And then last year, don't even want to get started on that.
[00:18:25] How we have this year.

[00:18:31] How we, maybe how you view, viewed me as a father.

[00:19:22] It was very like, I thought it was pretty even.
[00:19:27] Maybe like dad would take me to lessons and catch me at lessons.
[00:19:30] But I remember having a lot of snacks cause you didn't want to pay for concessions.
[00:19:38] So, so all my teammates were getting like hot dogs and chips.
[00:19:42] And I was like, I'll just see my ham sandwich.
[00:19:45] She made you the healthy snack.
[00:19:47] Yeah, she did.
[00:19:48] And your, your nickname is string cheese.
[00:19:52] So there was string, there was always string cheese somewhere.
[00:19:55] Yeah.
[00:19:55] That there's that too.
[00:19:57] But if we went to games or anything, I just remember like getting in the car and you're
[00:20:01] like, I thought you did pretty good.
[00:20:04] Not really.
[00:20:05] I don't know.
[00:20:05] I don't know how to describe it, but it was just very chill and mellow.
[00:20:09] And you wouldn't get like mad at me.
[00:20:12] Never.
[00:20:13] I, you'd only get like mad if I was like, I feel like if I was like, you could see my body
[00:20:18] language was bad or like I was being a bad teammate.
[00:20:21] You'd probably get me about that.
[00:20:23] But like softball wise.
[00:20:25] I don't think I ever, that wasn't part of me to say, Oh my God, I can't believe you walk
[00:20:30] the first three pitcher, the batters or whatever.
[00:20:32] Or you threw that for that.
[00:20:34] Oh, that lead off walk.
[00:20:35] We lost by four just because of that lead off walk.
[00:20:38] Yeah.
[00:20:39] That wasn't my thing.
[00:20:41] Me.
[00:20:41] It was always like when I see you struggle, like I internalize it and I'm like, if she's
[00:20:49] struggling, I'm struggling because I can't get out there to help you.
[00:20:53] That's my hardest thing.
[00:20:54] That's why I hide behind a wall or a pole or I walk in left field and see the last play.
[00:21:01] We walked it off.
[00:21:02] No, I didn't see it.
[00:21:03] I was too nervous.
[00:21:05] No, I saw a lot.
[00:21:07] I saw a lot.
[00:21:08] I just wasn't, I was around the corner back in left field.
[00:21:12] I was there.
[00:21:13] I always saw.
[00:21:14] I did.
[00:21:15] But yeah, I think the hardest thing for me was knowing that when you were struggling,
[00:21:19] I couldn't help you.
[00:21:21] And I wanted to be there to help you because I knew you could do.
[00:21:25] And there were points too, where I'm like, I don't know how to help her.
[00:21:29] And that was frustrating to me.
[00:21:31] Sometimes I just, I wanted to say something, but then like, if what I said, was it going
[00:21:38] to be the right thing to say or the wrong thing to say?
[00:21:42] So most of the time I was just like, yeah, I thought you did great.
[00:21:45] How'd you think you did?
[00:21:47] And I waited on you to say, but I didn't do this or I didn't do that type thing.
[00:21:50] I thought you did.
[00:21:51] Just keep plugging along.
[00:21:52] Here's next game.
[00:21:54] Yeah.
[00:21:56] My most memorable was when we were, I think, either in Vegas or Utah and I was on Briggs
[00:22:02] and I don't know if I had a, like a crappy game or something like that.
[00:22:08] And cause you took me to that tournament.
[00:22:11] It might've been Vegas and I was on Briggs and we saw Tatiana and we saw the Bracamonte
[00:22:20] team there and you were talking to either like their parents.
[00:22:24] Oh, I saw them and I was like, I missed.
[00:22:27] Yeah.
[00:22:27] Or I miss them so bad.
[00:22:29] And yeah, I think I broke down in the car ride back to the hotel.
[00:22:34] I was like, what am I doing?
[00:22:37] Yeah.
[00:22:37] Yeah.
[00:22:38] And we had to talk that up without dad there.
[00:22:42] And I think that was, that was the point where I'm like, it's up to you now.
[00:22:45] Yeah.
[00:22:46] If you feel where you're at is not making you better, then you've got to make that decision
[00:22:53] to go to where you're going to be better.
[00:22:56] I remember that.
[00:22:57] That was a hard conversation.
[00:22:58] It was cause we didn't want to win again, back to the loyal thing.
[00:23:02] We didn't want to switch again.
[00:23:04] Right.
[00:23:04] And they were working hard.
[00:23:06] With San Jose.
[00:23:07] With San Jose.
[00:23:08] And, and.
[00:23:09] Yeah.
[00:23:09] I think I was pretty good at that point.
