[00:00:07] [SPEAKER_00]: way moving my son into his dorm room. He's a freshman in college and my
[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_00]: daughter Lacie has been finishing up her last summer before she heads off to
[00:00:19] [SPEAKER_00]: her senior year. So here's a replay of Episode 12. Enjoy.
[00:00:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Mark, he was so like light-hearted. Hey you shouldn't have left the change up over the plate.
[00:00:34] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah I was like literally first thing he said was like you're gonna be back
[00:00:41] [SPEAKER_05]: you're gonna pitch again. Yeah I just knew that I was gonna come back like I wasn't
[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_05]: after he said that I was like because I mean that something like that can
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_05]: some players just be like I can't play anymore. I can't pitch anymore. Hello and welcome to
[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Catching You, a dad and daughter softball injury. I'm Rusty, a dad who's been in the dugout
[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and on the sidelines. And I'm Lacie, the daughter whose journey through softball has been
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_03]: filled with incredible wins, tough losses, and so many lessons both on and off the field.
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_01]: For the past 16 years we've navigated the highs and lows of softball together
[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_01]: from the local fields to national tournaments and everything in between. From the challenges
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_03]: of recruitment during COVID to the mental and emotional roller coaster that comes with being
[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_03]: a student-athlete, we will be sharing the perspectives of both the parent and athlete
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_03]: and firsthand experience of the impact of sports on mental health and the importance
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_00]: of support from the sidelines. Welcome back everyone to Catching You. I am your co-host
[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Rusty Ham with me is my other co-host Lacie Ham and we have a surprise guest
[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_00]: with my wife Lacie's mom Emily. Emily say hi. Hello. Lacie say hi. Hi parents.
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_00]: 21 year old daughter now. 21. I just turned 21. Yeah so talk about Sunday. Let's talk
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_04]: about Sunday. What was Sunday? Sunday was my 21st birthday. So we had a game in Davis
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_04]: and it was our first win of the season and I got to pitch the whole game and you guys came up with
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Jesse and it was super fun. Yeah. And we went out to dinner and had a little surprise when I
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_00]: came home with my friends and it was super fun. Yeah it was a great game like two to two
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_00]: bottom of seven they overthrow the girl goes on second we sack sack bun her over to third and
[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_00]: she hit the shingle to win the game. So it was pretty exciting game then we were able to get
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_00]: the San Jose for the second half of the Super Bowl so we saw that. That was pretty cool.
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Yep usher is in our show. Yep my wife Emily is here. She is going to give us her perspective
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_00]: on Lacie's growth through the softball journey. When I was throwing the ball back hard at Lacie
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_00]: back in the day and her reaction and then her reaction to her going to Mark's team.
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_00]: First Lacie I wanted to ask you we got a question from a listener. Nice. And I want you to answer
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_00]: this question. It's from Micah and Micah says can you possibly do an episode about being in
[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_00]: a pitching slump which maybe you can talk about Friday. Free time is breaking. Yeah
[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_00]: and then how and how to not be scared on the mound which is coincides what we're going to talk
[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_00]: about when you come back from your injury here. But can you talk about those two questions there?
[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I can probably talk about being like the scared part after like later.
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay. That the pitching slump I actually did horrible on Friday
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_04]: and I was serving up pitches like they were dessert platters. Like they were just hitting
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_04]: it so hard and I was walking people and but for a slump I think I would I would define it as
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_04]: a long term doing or performing not your best for a longer period of time which is what happened
[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_04]: last year especially when I get to conference something flicks in my head and says hey
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_04]: let's just not know how to pitch. I remember going to New Mexico and pitching in freezing cold
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_04]: temperatures trying to spin the ball and I felt like I could not do it. And New Mexico is always
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_04]: our first series so after that I was like really freaking myself out and really tried
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_04]: working that week on what to fix and then we played Colorado State the next weekend and I
[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_04]: still could not pitch a strike. But I find I think I've mentioned this in like past episodes
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_04]: I find I get the best like feedback especially if you're practicing with a team for a long
[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_04]: time you get the best feedback when you go out and work out by yourself. So that we always
[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_04]: have Mondays off so I went into I went to the field on Monday the following Monday after
[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Colorado State and I pitched in the cages for two hours and I just did my regular drills that
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_04]: I always do and I slowed things down and I focused on the little things and then we played
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Fresno State that next weekend and I pitched a whole seven innings and I was striking people
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_04]: out left and right and my pitches were working and I was back to my regular self. So it
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_04]: really took that one workout by myself to change my mindset. Yeah that's awesome. Hopefully
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Micah gets some nuggets out of that. To find freaking out what do you mean by freaking out
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_00]: and you're a slump and you're freaking out what does that mean? Like with a slump it's hard to
[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_04]: explain the feeling of forgetting how to hit or forgetting how to pitch or getting out of
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_04]: field ball. It just happens and you don't know why and sometimes the slump can progress
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_04]: because of that like your freaking out mindset oh my god I forgot how to play I forgot how
[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_04]: to do this but it really just if there's a bad game like how I did on Friday I went in
[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Saturday morning and I did this mental imagery meditation that morning in the before breakfast
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_04]: that my sports psychologist sent me last year and you visualize your best games
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_04]: that you played. So I was visualizing last year when I pitched against Fullerton,
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_04]: when I pitched against Fresno and I was visualizing like how my body felt, how my mind felt,
[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_04]: how the environment was and that kind of puts you in the zone of where you want to be in your
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_04]: upcoming game. So Saturday I did better than I did on Friday not as well as I wanted to
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_04]: but then I got to Sunday and I'm in this groove now where I'm comfortable with
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_04]: being out in a game setting and pitched all seven innings.
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah and your change up was on fire and listen you got a new pitching coach too so here's
[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_00]: his pitch calling and stuff like that so great job happy birthday.
[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Great job on the win. I don't know how to is it Emily, my wife, or Emily's mom or
[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Lacey's mom how do I describe it anyway?
[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_04]: You can call her. Okay he's my wife and then I say oh yeah.
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay and let's go back to let's go back to let's say first year 12s and Lacey's pitching on the
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_00]: side and I'm throwing the ball back as hard as I can there because she's missing her spots
[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_00]: from my body language is absolutely horrible and dropping my head and moping having to
[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_00]: get the ball across the street and then she comes to you and I'm sure she came to you a
[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_00]: couple times but just kind of describes that her coming to you and then describe like the
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_00]: meltdown that she had at the kitchen table.
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know if you guys ever knew I would peek through the window shades oh I would see
[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_06]: it I would see it all the time and watch you guys pitch so I would see your body language
[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_06]: I would see Lacey's frustration I would see you having to go through the gate and walk
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_06]: across the street and get the balls. I wouldn't always watch you because I wouldn't want to see
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_06]: your body language right I would want to see Lacey getting upset but when she came in and
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_06]: talked to me and telling me about how you were acting I go I believe I said you need to
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_06]: talk to your dad you need to go tell him how you feel you need to speak up you need to be
[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_06]: honest and tell him you're not helping the situation. I wasn't. Back on fur to tell you
[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_06]: because I'm not sitting there catching sitting here seeing you to her and I'm seeing her
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_06]: reacting to you and that was not a good combination I thought it was important for
[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_06]: her to go back and talk to you and tell you how you really felt and I think that's
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_04]: when it came to the kitchen table because it's hard it's hard for me to express my
[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_06]: feelings without crying. So the kitchen table was a mess yeah yeah but it was it was awesome
[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_00]: because you obviously needed mom's support so mom was at the kitchen table too but that was it
[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_00]: was super cool for you to express how you were feeling and I described in I think maybe
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_00]: it was last episode that nine-year-old that was crying because she didn't know who to
[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_00]: she wanted to listen to her travel coach and then she wanted to listen to her pitching
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_00]: coach and she was crying after you know my you should not be crying and you were crying
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_00]: because I was not acting appropriate as a father. It's like an act of like confrontation
[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_04]: and I didn't really have any experience with that when I was that age. Right yeah you didn't
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_00]: know how to handle it so no I appreciate you know doing that because then I changed I backed
[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_00]: off and I think our relationship has grown since then. So we're on Chris's team we're in
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_00]: these intense these we're going to these really big tournaments intense tournaments
[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_00]: where would you watch the games? You have the parents that they have the beach chairs
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_00]: right behind them right by the fence where would you where were you when these games going on?
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_06]: I think every pitcher's mother and or father does the same thing maybe a little bit different
[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_06]: but I would go hide. I would want to watch I would go hide behind a pole I would go
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_06]: hide behind a bathroom I would sometimes go out in the outfield and hide behind the fence
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_06]: or I would walk along wherever our dugout was while you were pitching and like I
[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah so were you just nervous for her or what like? I'm nervous for her because like
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm a fixer I'm a helper. Yeah. I couldn't help her I couldn't fix anything I just had to
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know send off some sort of good vibes like come on Lacey you can do it come on
[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_04]: please throw a strike please throw a strike please don't walk this girl please don't walk
[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_04]: like because sometimes there would always be times where say
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_04]: mom you would take me to tournaments or and daddy would stay home with Jessie or opposite
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_04]: sometimes my mom would be with these intense games but she's the only one there and my
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_04]: dad's not there so sometimes I'd be like in them on the mound sometimes you want to
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_04]: like look for your parents or see where they are and um where is my well? And then I
[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_00]: can such instead and I'm like what if there was there was a brick bathroom structure she
[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_06]: would hide behind the corner yeah well I would I remember some very intense games
[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_06]: especially like I went I remember with Christine LaPena and it was Kansas City and it was
[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_06]: when M hit that winning hit we were both on back behind the fence on right side
[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_06]: just watching it all unfold and she hit it and we were just like
[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean really picked her up because she's making it slow
[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_06]: um I think that was on a number of occasions where we were out in the outfield and I picked
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_00]: her up and we were just so excited so on that note speaking of parents so describe
[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_00]: our relationship with parents um we've talked about a couple of parents on the team but
[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_00]: that was pretty cool times right with Chris's team so describe your relationship with some
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_06]: of these parents their life long we're still friends with many of those parents we're still
[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_06]: in contact Veronica and Lenny Tatiana's parents still friends with Christine and Gabe Bonilla
[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_06]: we've got Candice and Billy Moyer Chris and Katrina we've got friend Facebook friends with
[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_06]: this is parents and then there's like people like
[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Moi uh friends with him on Facebook yeah dad and it's her birthday today and then from the
[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_06]: 12s to 14s we're still friends with a lot of people on the 14s that's right so it's we
[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_06]: don't we lose contact we're not seeing each other as often but I don't think we're ever
[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_06]: going to lose those memories we're never going to lose Kansas City we're never going to
[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_06]: Tennessee, Kaling we're never going to lose P.G.F. memories right Stockton memories
[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_06]: even back to All Stars with Chris and you bringing your cleats and me having to go
[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_06]: to Dixie there's just some really good memories that we have together because of soft
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_00]: yeah those things I'll cherish forever very cool yeah so let's let's transition then you
[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_00]: said 14 so we get the call from Mark right we're camping I don't know if you remember
[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_00]: that we were camping get the call from Mark that he wants us on their team what were your
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_00]: thoughts of because we're getting split up now right we're on this we were talking about the
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_00]: 12s and how awesome it was now we're getting split up so what were your thoughts on moving
[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_06]: to the 14s and being on this team I was excited for Lacey because we knew that's what
[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_06]: the plan was but I also was very sad because I knew that there were people that were not coming
[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_06]: with us I was worried about how they were feeling because I'm sure they're thinking why
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_06]: aren't we playing for Mark why isn't my daughter playing for Mark how come she wasn't
[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_06]: asked to play for Mark my daughter played with Lacey for three years that was really difficult
[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_06]: I didn't want to see a split apart I wish that they did keep everybody together but I knew
[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_06]: they had a plan and we had to stick to that plan for Lacey and it was hard it was definitely
[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_06]: not easy it was not easy going to that 14s team with a bunch of different parents
[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_06]: that we didn't know and we came to know them and we came together and I was terrified of
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Mark he's a little intimidating it's okay he's just a little intimidating yes but man that
[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_06]: he was an amazing coach and he knew exactly what he wanted out of you and we knew what he
[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_06]: wanted out of Karen what parents he wanted and what parents he didn't want and he was just
[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_06]: flat out he'll tell you right there there was no fluff it was straight hard go this is what
[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_06]: I want type deal and it was hard to adjust to that Chris was like that too but I always felt
[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Mark had this big giant like he was the statue of softball 14-year coach and you didn't want to
[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_00]: do anything wrong yeah because 14 at the time when Lacey talked about it was at that time
[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_00]: first year 14 they were getting recruited yeah right and so the pressure was on these eighth
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_00]: graders to perform and have these power five colleges look at them and so I know you and
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_00]: the parents were like oh my god that has a lot of pressure so we get the second year 14 so we get
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_00]: we skate through first year 14s I think a couple girls on that team got recruited
[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Lacey we're now second year 14s right you've gone through fall you did really well
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_00]: pitching with Mark and you and Leo were kicking by and I think Lex Corvera was on
[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_00]: that team too as well you take the winter break you come back you are now in high school
[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_00]: your freshman you didn't get a lot of innings because you're behind on MPs who eventually went
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_00]: to Minnesota and became a professional so any were very scarce right yeah and then you get
[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_00]: back to practicing after high school's over and Father's Day rolls around and so describe
[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_04]: what happened on Father's Day yeah we have practice on Father's Day of course because
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_04]: there's no days off and we're leaving for New Jersey the next day or the day after so we have
[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_04]: to get a practice in of course and at first Mark says we're just going to keep it simple today
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_04]: we're going in the cages and then you guys can go us pitchers are like all right we're
[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_04]: just going to help out around the cages maybe do some soft toss and then we're out of here
[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_04]: so after the cages he goes you know what I think we need to get some live hitting it me and Liv are
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_04]: like I thought we were done this is crazy now we got to go warm up and all this stuff
[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_04]: so I remember warming up with Liv and then Liv pitched first like a few batters
[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_04]: and then it was my turn and I don't know how many batters that I did before or anything
[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_04]: but one of my teammates comes up she is now at Baylor University let's backtrack this she was on
[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_00]: our 10u yeah travel team and then she went to member SoCal 3D then she went to SoCal 3D
[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_00]: yeah which was another favorite team of ours right because we love those coaches
[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_00]: but she used to play for us yeah he left and then now she's back with
[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Buster's and Mark she got recruited by Arizona and then she transferred to Baylor so go ahead sorry
[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah so she's now at Baylor where this this team's pretty close too like I it's a close
[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_04]: comparison to Chris's team I'm close with a lot of the girls and so this is the days where
[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_04]: wearing a mask was not cool it it's definitely more recently that girls are like I'm going to
[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_04]: wear a mask and actually wanted to wear a mask in our organization if you wore a mask
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_04]: you were weak so to say so none of us wore masks and I wasn't wearing one I was wearing visor
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_04]: and I could just feel in my we did not want to pitch live so in my mentality I'm like
[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_04]: all right so I'm just going to try and work on my spins and my pitches
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_04]: but I throw a change up inside to yeah to my teammate and she rips that thing right back at
[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_04]: me and my reaction time I don't know how fast it was coming at me but pretty fast
[00:20:10] [SPEAKER_04]: didn't really react very well I throw my glove up but I turned my head to the side to the right
[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_04]: and I kind of don't really remember it hitting me but I remember my vision going
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_04]: kind of like brown not necessarily like black but kind of like brown and then my eye it's
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_04]: like my ears are ringing and I can hear Mark like literally the only person I hear is Mark
[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_04]: and he's telling me to like sit down lay sit down lay sit down and then I
[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_04]: black out and and then I know before I blacked out I felt my nose was really cold so I remember
[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_04]: like stumbling around and then I wipe my nose and I look down and finally I see blood
[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_04]: on my nose or on my hand and then I black out and then I wake up to my mom is holding me
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_04]: and I'm on the floor and I have these firefighters just like looking at me
[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_04]: and they're trying to ask me questions and I am they asked me what day it is and I say father's
[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_04]: day I have no idea I just say father's day and they're asking me what year it is I don't know
[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_04]: I say I remember my name thankfully but the day I just say father's day I don't really
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_04]: remember the rest of that and then I have the neck brace on but we can cut to mom's perspective
[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_00]: yeah so you're there in practice right just probably chilling with all the other parents
[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_00]: exactly what I was doing yeah you gave me the day off right because I normally take
[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Lacey to practices and so you're like I don't know you stay home it's father's day I'll
[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_06]: take her so what were you doing I was standing up and I was talking to another mom
[00:22:03] [SPEAKER_06]: we were on our phones like looking up restaurants on Yelp for New York
[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_06]: where we were going I remember and looking through an office and I hear and I see Lacey get
[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_06]: hit I and from there I dropped my phone and I sprinted to that mount I did not care what
[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_06]: was going on I went straight to her I do remember Mark yelling to sit down and as soon as I got
[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_06]: there I caught her and I laid her back on me I do remember blood coming out of your nose
[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_06]: but it wasn't red blood it was like dark it was like dark brown in my ears yeah yeah I
[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_06]: remember a parent calling 911 I remember seeing Mark sprint I've never seen Mark's run to open
[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_06]: up the gate to allow the fire trucks and the ambulance to come to the field I remember I think
[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_06]: somebody called you the parent called you rusty field told you what happened
[00:23:15] [SPEAKER_06]: so ambulance came they were asking questions and such and then they said mom do you just want to
[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_06]: drive her yourself to the hospital do you really even think she needs to go to the hospital
[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_00]: let's take a quick break if you want to leave us a message use the link in the show notes
[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_00]: and if you want us to respond leave your name and email address also please rate us
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_00]: and or leave a review as we're trying to grow the show every day finally Lacey and I
[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_00]: both love coffee we would greatly appreciate any contribution to the show that link is also in the
[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_00]: show notes thank you take care they asked you that blood coming out of her nose and ears and
[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_06]: they're asking anything was wrong they didn't think anything was wrong and I'm like my
[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_06]: daughter just got a line drive to the temple of her head she's going to go now take her in
[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_04]: the ambulance you're going to the hospital I do remember thinking I got hit right here but it
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_04]: I turned my head it was the it was behind my ear behind here it was literally right above your ear
[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah because what you did is like you pitched and then you went up to get your like to catch it
[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah but either you were too late or too early and you turned yeah it hit right back here
[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah I remember the pain being in like my temples though I'm like oh my god like it
[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_06]: I didn't know what to think I couldn't process it and then the emergency medic said oh she
[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know if she might have a concussion she might not they didn't take it very seriously
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_06]: so I'm like no my daughter's going to the hospital um I didn't ride in the house I didn't
[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_06]: ride in the ambulance with you because I had in my car so I scooped up all my stuff all the
[00:25:13] [SPEAKER_06]: parents were like we'll get it all for you followed you to the ambulance we went to the
[00:25:20] [SPEAKER_06]: I remember him saying I'm gonna call my wife right now letting them know that
[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Lacey's coming and then I can't look back it's okay yeah so took her to ICU
[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_00]: so you're in there for emergency emergency but then you got transferred to ICU for
[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_06]: gently part was the biggest part that's when she started to feel it
[00:25:45] [SPEAKER_06]: my head hurts it hurts really bad yeah I started growing up growing up and
[00:25:53] [SPEAKER_06]: growing up like dark like yeah bile it was like blood yeah stomach and then they took you for
[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_04]: an x-ray well amber came yeah she came in see me she's the first to see me she was in shambles
[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_07]: yeah she from her mom and her yeah it was an accident 100 percent
[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_06]: she there was like there was nothing that could have prevented it yeah maybe I did wear a mask
[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_04]: okay so if I did wear a mask it would have hit me in the same spot because reaction time
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_04]: we can talk about this in a later episode but now I feel like more now when I pitch and
[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_04]: I can see it going over the plate maybe a little bit like love immediately goes up like this
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_00]: when you know you miss a spot or I change that's like hanging a little bit it's I go like this
[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_04]: okay so I remember because amber came before and then I'm just like I don't even I'm just
[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_04]: laying there trying not to throw up obviously and I have a head I have an ice pack on my head
[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_04]: after getting 100 mile per hour line drive to the head I have an ice pack
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_04]: and I get the x-ray or cat a cat scan I felt I thought it was no you didn't take a
[00:27:31] [SPEAKER_04]: look at it and then I remember I don't like I did the talk the doctor pull you aside I don't
[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_04]: remember yeah I the doctor pulled my mom and then I had to come in and talk to you
[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah and then she knelt down to me crying saying that I was going to have surgery
[00:27:52] [SPEAKER_04]: because I was gonna have brain surgery because I had internal bleeding
[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_04]: even told that a hematoma and that's why my nose was bleeding and that's why my ears were
[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_04]: bleeding so that's what it all hit a little differently yep that's when so the nurse told
[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_06]: me and I lost yeah I was there by myself I had to call your dad
[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_06]: Lacey's gonna have brain surgery you need to get here now I was on the porch drinking coffee
[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah and I get that I'm like oh I'm out of here yeah I think the nurse she's you're gonna she's
[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_06]: gonna be transferred to a very good children's hospital in Long Beach they took care of
[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_06]: everything I remember calling Cynthia Plexin and telling her we were falling together
[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_06]: I think I followed you in the ambulance and I think that's when I called me mom papa and
[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_06]: I called grandma to let them know and at that point I was just like what is gonna happen
[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_06]: what is gonna happen to my daughter they're gonna shave her head she's gonna have brain
[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_06]: surgery oh my god I didn't know I was in pure panic mode then we got to I think it was
[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Long Beach Children's they yeah they rolled me in they were trying to keep me calm on the
[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_04]: ambulance I really didn't know what to expect yeah I don't remember much the ambulance is
[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_04]: creeping me out now I don't really like going in it like ambulances but we go in there they take
[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_04]: a CAT scan I go in and take a CAT scan and then after they wheel me they literally wheel me
[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_04]: straight from the CAT scan to the OR and there's I kid you not maybe 20 nurses just
[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_04]: running around like prepping things right and I'm like oh my god happening and I remember
[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_04]: this one nurse and I'm literally like five minutes from being like told that okay surgery
[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_04]: needs to start five minutes in and the nurse comes up to my side table she grabs my hands
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_04]: and she's the bleeding stopped no more surgery and she's like she called me a miracle because
[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_04]: she's I don't know how I don't know like what in the world you did or what someone else did
[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_04]: but the bleeding legit just stopped in that period of time I don't know when it did
[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_04]: but it did like right before that I was supposed to get surgery and then they just called it off
[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_06]: yeah they basically after that CAT scan they said surgery is not needed we're gonna keep her
[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_06]: for swelling on the brain to monitor because you were in a lot of pain but the relief of
[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_06]: you did not have to have surgery I think there was still a possibility but not as high
[00:30:50] [SPEAKER_06]: a possibility so from that CAT scan you in the OR and then you got transferred to the ICU
[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_06]: and then the ICU is that's when everything was coming out that's when
[00:31:00] [SPEAKER_06]: I shared all the news because Lacey's teammates were just like what's going on
[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_06]: and Marduk was the first person that showed up yeah dad you can talk about it because
[00:31:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know you guys can't see it if you're listening on a podcast you can't see but they're
[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_00]: very emotional at this point so it was yeah it was a scary time right surgery is
[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_00]: when you talk about surgery it's pretty serious you there's a lot of things going through your
[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_00]: is her career over is this it now what we've been we've been gearing up to
[00:31:38] [SPEAKER_00]: play in college softball and then just one little episode kind of ended it all which
[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_00]: and you spoke about it that something happened with divine whatever you want to call it
[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_00]: something happened where your brain stopped bleeding and like what you didn't have to go
[00:31:52] [SPEAKER_00]: under surgery and you went into ice and then just the support just the barrage of support
[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Mark came in your teammates were coming in visiting face foot
[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_07]: Mark he was so like light-hearted hey you shouldn't have left the change up over the plate
[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_07]: yeah Jen was like literally first thing he said was like you're gonna be back
[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_07]: he's you're gonna pitch again yeah I just knew that I was gonna come back like I wasn't
[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_07]: after you said that I was like because I mean that something like that can like
[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_04]: so some players just be like I can't play anymore I can't pitch anymore
[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_00]: like I'm just and we'll get into that you're gonna we're gonna get into the mindset and
[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_00]: having to come back and yeah yeah having line drives come back at you again
[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_00]: yeah but the support you got was tremendous yeah you weren't on facebook you're 14 years old
[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_00]: you're like facebook or for old people I wasn't allowed to be on their show exactly
[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_00]: but some moms shared it and just get the support from all the mojo parents from the
[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_00]: everybody texas the texas teams the georgia teams everybody was just reaching out supporting
[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_00]: family it was great to see that the softball community is a community it's a family you
[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_00]: guys are competing against each other and yeah you want to beat each other but in the end the
[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_00]: softball community is actually really cool because they're just so supportive they understand
[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_00]: the process I don't want to say process they understand what you go through on a day-to-day
[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_00]: basis so pretty cool stuff I'm it's here you guys are making me tear up because you guys are
[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_00]: so emotional but yeah so next next episode we're going to get into the recovery mode
[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_00]: and how that what that looked like and you're still recovering right whatever line drive goes
[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_04]: by your head there's probably some flashbacks I bet it's so much better now but high school is
