This episode features a father discussing the importance and personal reasons behind starting a podcast with his daughter, Lacie. He highlights the rarity of father-daughter podcasts and shares their motivation for entering the podcasting world together. The father touches on his experiences with his own podcast about real estate investing and buying and selling homes on terms. He reflects on the time spent with children and the realization that, after they grow up, opportunities to connect can become limited, driving his desire to maintain a close relationship with his daughter through podcasting.
The podcast name, 'Catching You', is inspired by a poem he wrote for Lacie, symbolizing the various moments he has 'caught' or shared with her over the years. Moreover, he recommends the book 'Living Forward' for its approach to life planning and evaluating personal relationships as bank accounts in terms of emotional and spiritual fulfillment. The father also mentions Lacie's intent to address mental health issues among young athletes through the podcast, aiming to offer strategies to overcome mental challenges. Lastly, the script hints at an upcoming guest appearance on the 'Fundamental Fast Pitch' podcast, where they plan to explore Lacie's college experience and recruitment process, among other topics.

[00:00:00] So that's part of the reason why I wanted to do that with her.
[00:00:04] The name of the podcast is Catching You.
[00:00:06] I wrote a poem for her when she was 14 years old called Catching You.
[00:00:13] It's playing words, right?
[00:00:15] It's part of those, I love catching you with your friend.
[00:00:18] I love catching you with hanging out with your brother.
[00:00:21] I love catching you.
[00:00:22] So different things in her life that was going on.
[00:00:24] I love catching her.
[00:00:25] Catching her in the act is the playing of words.
[00:00:27] And I also love catching her bullpen.
[00:00:30] But not after a while when she started getting faster than my eyes that were going bad,
[00:00:37] I didn't really love catching her as much as I used to.
[00:00:40] Hello and welcome to Catching You, a dad and daughter softball journey.
[00:00:44] I'm Rusty, a dad who's been in the dugout and on the sideline.
[00:00:48] And I'm Lacie, the daughter whose journey through softball has been filled with incredible
[00:00:52] winds, tough losses and so many lessons both on and off the field.
[00:00:56] For the past 16 years we've navigated the highs and lows of softball together
[00:01:00] from the local fields to national tournaments and everything in between.
[00:01:05] From the challenges of recruitment during COVID to the mental and emotional roller coaster that comes with being a student athlete
[00:01:10] we will be sharing the perspectives of both a parent and athlete
[00:01:14] and firsthand experience of the impact of sports on mental health
[00:01:17] and the importance of support from the sidelines.
[00:01:21] Welcome back everyone.
[00:01:23] This is your co-host, Rusty Henn, of Catching You.
[00:01:27] My other co-host is actually going to be playing in about 30 minutes.
[00:01:32] She was unable to make it to this week's podcast so I'm flying solo again.
[00:01:39] And one of the things I wanted to talk about was
[00:01:43] I was doing a pre-interview, pre-planning for a podcast that I'm going to be on
[00:01:49] that Lacie and I are going to be on next week.
[00:01:52] And one of the questions they asked me was why are Lacie and I doing a podcast together?
[00:01:59] And great question.
[00:02:01] You don't see a whole lot of father-daughter type of podcasts out there.
[00:02:05] She's always been fascinated about doing podcasts.
[00:02:08] She talked about maybe doing one at her school as a friend.
[00:02:12] I'm currently doing one.
[00:02:15] It's not out yet, but I'm currently going to be doing another podcast in the real estate investing section,
[00:02:21] being another guy we're going to do a podcast regarding buying and selling homes on terms.
[00:02:28] So I can put that in the link if you guys want to everyone listen to buying and selling homes on terms.
[00:02:36] But it was a great question.
[00:02:39] And my analogy to them was, and I forgot who I heard this from,
[00:02:45] but it's the first 18 years when you have a child, the first 18 years you're pretty much seeing them every day.
[00:02:52] Right? Not every day, but just every year you're with them and they're living in your home
[00:02:57] and then they go to college.
[00:02:59] Most go to college, not everybody, but I'm speaking primarily to people that,
[00:03:02] the kids that go off to college for four years or so.
[00:03:05] The analogy was you see them for 18 years and then the next 18 years,
[00:03:13] hypersuggestionally let's say they do go to college,
[00:03:15] the next 18 years and then after college they find a job, they get married, have kids,
[00:03:22] so they are starting their own line.
[00:03:24] So the next 18 years you only see them for a total of one year, if that makes sense.
[00:03:33] So for the next 18 years in that 18-year span, you're only going to see them for 365 days.
[00:03:41] These are rough numbers, right? There's nothing exact science,
[00:03:44] but so that got me thinking it's true, right?
[00:03:47] When she went off to college we had only faced timing every once in a while
[00:03:50] but it wasn't like we were seeing each other.
[00:03:54] We'd go and watch her play and see her that way,
[00:03:58] but this way I mean Lola too, hop on a podcast with her, film it.
[00:04:05] I get to see her, we get to plan the podcast,
[00:04:09] we get to talk about how our day was
[00:04:12] so it's really cool to be able to hang out with her.
[00:04:16] We're not near each other physically but we're on camera together
[00:04:20] and I'm able to see her and just see her faith every day
[00:04:24] and ask her questions, how she's doing.
[00:04:26] So that's part of the reason why I wanted to do that with her.
[00:04:29] The name of the podcast is Catching You.
[00:04:31] I wrote a poem for her when she was 14 years old called Catching You
[00:04:38] and it's playing words right?
[00:04:40] It's part of it was I love catching you with your friends.
[00:04:43] I love catching you with hanging out with your brother.
[00:04:46] I love catching you so different things in her life that was going on
[00:04:49] and I loved catching her.
[00:04:50] Catching her in the act is playing words
[00:04:53] and I also loved catching her bullpen.
[00:04:56] But not after a while when she started getting faster
[00:05:00] then my eyesight was going bad
[00:05:02] I didn't really love catching her as much as I used to
[00:05:06] but that kind of leads me into what I was doing personally
[00:05:11] and if you can see there's a book right here called Living Forward
[00:05:15] so I really highly recommend the book Living Forward
[00:05:20] and what it basically has the end in mind
[00:05:24] and having the end in mind meaning what on your last days
[00:05:30] what are people going to talk about?
[00:05:32] What are they going to hypothetically at my funeral?
[00:05:35] What are they going to say about me?
[00:05:37] So that kind of hit home because my mom right now
[00:05:40] is going through some hard times
[00:05:42] and so this kind of gets me thinking about the end
[00:05:45] and how I want to live my life
[00:05:47] and how I want other people to view me
[00:05:49] and how I want to treat other people.
[00:05:51] So I really recommend it.
[00:05:53] What it does is you think about your different aspects of your life
[00:05:58] so your personal life, your relationships
[00:06:03] relationship with your wife, relationship with your kids,
[00:06:05] relationship with friends, your relationship with financing.
[00:06:09] So different aspects of your life
[00:06:11] and you break it down into those categories
[00:06:14] and those categories you treat them like a bank account
[00:06:18] if that makes sense.
[00:06:20] Your spiritual life, you treat that as a bank account.
[00:06:23] Now in bank accounts we're always looking to see
[00:06:26] if it's in the black meaning you have a lot in the reserves
[00:06:31] meaning it's a healthy bank account.
[00:06:33] Are you living paycheck to paycheck
[00:06:36] where you're stressed out about paying the bills?
[00:06:40] It's not as bad.
[00:06:42] It's not a healthy one but it's not you're so making money
[00:06:46] and money is coming in but money is also going out.
[00:06:49] How's that relationship
[00:06:50] hypothetically with your wife or your husband
[00:06:53] or your son or daughter?
[00:06:55] So what I did is I tick those categories
[00:06:59] and then are you in the red meaning can you not pay your bills
[00:07:03] or are you missing payments?
[00:07:05] And again it's not about financing
[00:07:07] one of the categories is but you think about your life
[00:07:10] and you think about those categories
[00:07:12] and you think about it as a bank account.
[00:07:14] Now am I doing really well with my relationship with my wife
[00:07:19] and is it in the black?
[00:07:20] Is it healthy?
[00:07:21] Or are we living paycheck to paycheck?
[00:07:23] Are we stressing out?
[00:07:24] Is our relationship not doing so well?
[00:07:26] So you look at it and you dig deep
[00:07:29] and you really have to be honest with yourself.
[00:07:32] So that's what I've been doing with my life
[00:07:35] as far as my relationship with my kids
[00:07:37] and my wife and friends and family.
[00:07:40] My bank account, my spiritual
[00:07:43] and it was very healthy.
[00:07:45] It was a very healthy exercise
[00:07:47] to visualize what people would talk about
[00:07:49] would say about you at the end of the day
[00:07:51] and I highly recommend that
[00:07:53] because it changes the way you talk to people
[00:08:00] changes the way that you react.
[00:08:03] I'm not reactive anymore.
[00:08:04] I just let things go
[00:08:06] because a lot of things aren't as important
[00:08:08] as I thought they used to be.
[00:08:10] So yeah, so this is a really short podcast
[00:08:14] I just want to do a real quick solo podcast
[00:08:16] just to throw out there what's on my mind
[00:08:19] as far as relationships
[00:08:20] and why my daughter and I are doing this.
[00:08:23] She on her end, she was struggling
[00:08:26] with some mental health issues
[00:08:28] and again she's a competitor
[00:08:30] she hates the lose
[00:08:32] and when she's not doing well
[00:08:33] then those type of things start to creep in
[00:08:36] and she really wants to bring it to light
[00:08:38] as far as it is a thing
[00:08:40] it's a challenge sometimes
[00:08:42] because you have the top softball players out there
[00:08:45] I'm sure the top softball players
[00:08:47] have their mental issues
[00:08:49] and a lot of girls don't talk about it
[00:08:51] and again if you talk about it too much
[00:08:54] then you start getting into this depression
[00:08:56] so what you want to do is just recognize it first
[00:08:59] hey I'm feeling a little different than I used to
[00:09:03] but then you got to find strategies
[00:09:05] and that's what she wants to do
[00:09:06] she wants to find strategies for other people
[00:09:09] to get out of that funk
[00:09:11] like a lot of funk
[00:09:12] like what strategies can you use
[00:09:16] in order to get out of that mental funk
[00:09:20] that a lot of people get into
[00:09:22] and that's why a lot of girls
[00:09:24] they just end up quitting softball
[00:09:26] or again they quit
[00:09:28] whatever is going on in their life
[00:09:30] they quit
[00:09:32] I'm not the same girls
[00:09:33] but people that have mental health issues
[00:09:37] they give up because it's not worth it anymore to them
[00:09:40] what she wants to do is she wants to help them get over that
[00:09:43] those mental roadblocks so to speak
[00:09:47] and have them thrive in whatever their pasturing about
[00:09:50] again this is just a short little podcast
[00:09:53] we're going to be
[00:09:56] not necessarily an interview we're going to next week
[00:09:58] we're going to hook up with Fundamental Fastpitch
[00:10:02] it's a great podcast
[00:10:04] you guys should go out
[00:10:06] before you listen to ours with them
[00:10:09] go check it out they have over a hundred episodes
[00:10:11] they do a great job
[00:10:13] on their end
[00:10:14] and we're just going to chat
[00:10:17] they're going to ask us questions
[00:10:19] we're going to ask some questions
[00:10:20] we're going to get into Lacey's college experience
[00:10:23] maybe look back at her recruiting process
[00:10:27] and go from there
[00:10:29] but yeah we have some really cool things come up
[00:10:31] in the very near future
[00:10:33] and I hope to see everybody on the other side
[00:10:35] take everybody
[00:10:36] Lacey if you're listening I love you
